Vestibular Disorders
Many patients suffer with "dizziness" or vertigo. Sometimes this occurs as a result of an injury, such as a motor vehicle accident or fall. Other times, it develops on its own, with no known precipitating factor. In the past, patients were prescribed a variety of medications and told they would have to "live with it". Today, those same patients have a choice, Vestibular Rehabilitation.
The vestibular system, located within the inner ear, is a complex array of fluid-filled tubes ("Semicircular canals") and stones ("otoliths"), which work together to provide information to the brain. The vestibular system is the method used by your brain to determine what is up or down. When coupled with your visual system (eyes), your brain can accurately determine motion and position. If however, one of these systems becomes disrupted, the conflicting information can create a sense of imbalance, disequilibrium, or even nausea.
